Zona Arqueológica El Tepozteco is a sanctuary complex whose main occupation dates to the Middle and Late Postclassic, 1200–1521 CE. Its four architectural elements are the temple, associated buildings, plaza and residential area.

The temple sits on a pyramidal base, with a staircase on its west side and the temple chamber on its east side. The site’s elevated setting is part of the visit, but the climb is a substantial part of getting there.

How do you find the Tepozteco trail access?

How do you find the Tepozteco trail access?

The ascent begins at the paraje of Axitla, at the end of Calle del Tepozteco. INAH identifies Calle del Tepozteco as the continuation of Calle 5 de Mayo; follow it toward Axitla to reach the trail access.

The site address is Avenida del Tepozteco s/n, Barrio de la Santa Cruz, Tepoztlán, Morelos. If you are driving, INAH’s directions also lead to Axitla via Calle del Tepozteco.

For a broader sense of the town’s layout, the route between Puerto Villamar and Tepoztlán’s town centre gives useful context for planning your time in town.

What is the uphill walk like?

The rustic trail from Tepoztlán to the sanctuary is 2 km long, climbing from the town plaza at 1,715 m above sea level to the sanctuary at 2,310 m. That is an elevation difference of 595 m over the route.

INAH cautions that the trail is not easy for people unaccustomed to walking on this type of terrain. Plan your visit around the uphill walk, rather than treating the sanctuary as a quick stop after reaching Axitla.
