What the archaeological zone contains

INAH describes Tlatelolco as an important commercial center during the Late Postclassic period, from 1350 to 1521 CE. The city was founded in 1337.

Excavations began on April 8, 1944. Work from 1960 to 1968 recovered 67 structures, including the Temple of Ehécatl-Quetzalcóatl and the Great Basamento, also called Temple “I.”

The site also includes the Sala de Interpretación del Gran Complejo Cultural de México-Tlatelolco, the Museo de Sitio, the Museo de la Caja de Agua and the Sala Homenaje a Cuauhtémoc. The Museo de Sitio Caja de Agua is included in the archaeological-zone admission price; it has its own weekday opening hours, so plan that stop separately.

ADO describes bus service between Tepoztlán’s bus station and Mexico City’s Terminal Sur (Taxqueña), with an approximate door-to-door journey of 1 hour 15 minutes. Most OCC and ADO services from Taxqueña to Tepoztlán are direct, without intermediate stops; check the operator’s current schedules before building your day around the journey.

From Taxqueña, the site is accessible via Metro Line 3 to Tlatelolco station. The Trolebús also runs south to north on Eje Central to Avenida Flores Magón.

Hotel Puerto Villamar is in Tepoztlán; Puerto Villamar can be a starting point for planning the Tepoztlán portion of the trip, but the bus-terminal connection and onward Mexico City journey still need to fit your schedule.

Allowing time for the return

For a trip from Tepoztlán, account for the bus journey to Taxqueña, the onward connection to Tlatelolco and the return trip before deciding how much time to spend at the site. The published 1 hour 15 minute bus journey is approximate and covers the Tepoztlán–Mexico City terminal connection, not the full trip to the archaeological zone.

If you’re planning other Mexico City stops on the same trip, the Museo Nacional de Culturas Populares is another destination covered in a day-trip guide from Tepoztlán.
